The original amount of money borrowed or the remaining balance of a loan, excluding interest charges. Example: A Kenyan teacher borrows KES 500,000 to buy a plot of land. After one year of payments totalling KES 180,000, only KES 105,000 went toward the principal — the rest was interest. Her remaining principal balance is KES 395,000.
